Where should fire alarms be placed?

Key Placement Locations

  • Every Bedroom: Protects people who sleep with their doors closed
  • Outside Sleeping Areas: Placed in the hallway or immediate vicinity of bedrooms
  • Every Level: Includes the attic, living areas, and the basement (place basement alarms on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs)
  • Installation Rules
  • High on Walls or Ceilings: Mount ceiling alarms near the center of the room, at least 4 inches away from walls. Mount wall alarms with the top edge 4 to 12 inches below the ceiling
  • Away from Kitchens: Keep alarms at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances to prevent false alarms
  • Away from Airflow: Position at least 3 feet away from ceiling fans and HVAC air vents
